Minutes of March 27, 2009 ScienceSim Senate

On the call: Andrew Fitz Gibbon, Jessie Puls, Joel Morrissette, Mic Bowman, Tom Murphy, Paul Steinberg, Wilf Pinfold

Next senate meeting: Apr 3, 2009 in SciSim at Galileo (181, 181, 32)

Voice

  • Joel has passed all his config info to Johann who seeks to replicate the install and hence the sound barrier Joel has encountered.
  • We used the High Def Conferencing (https://www.hidefconferencing.com:443/) for the last half of the call. My sound kept dropping out, which to the assembled group was High-larious.
    • It's only limitation is the number of seats. Wilf is looking into funding it through SC

A River Runs through It

  • Wilf is contacting The Center for Coastal Margin Observation & Prediction (CMOP - http://www.stccmop.org/) to look towards them creating a ScienceSim plaza to display real and simulated projections of the Columbia River. This would likely be done by the Science and Technology University Research Network (SATURN), an emerging end-to-end coastal margin observatory.

Call the elevator, its time to take OpenSim to the next level

  • There are once again a number of pending OpenSim updates to fold together as our next ScienceSim release
  • One fix is the ability to go from 1000 objects to 70,000 objects
    • this will help Johan's System dynamics model
    • it will help Charlie's desired GalaxSee simulation
  • Hopefully will also help the memory leak that is present. Simulator behavior gets hinky after 5 days or so of running without a reboot

Senate invite

  • I will be inviting representatives of the current ScienceSim plazas to the next Senate meeting

Outstanding Issues

  • Need SC09 ScienceSim paper by Johan and someone developing a Science model using ExtSim. The time fuse for this is very short: April 3rd
  • need ScienceSim BOF set up for SC09
                                             ... Tom Murphy
