ScienceSim Calendar

  • Next Up: ”Think Parallel” Blogcast with guest Dan Ernst Tuesday May 5th from 10:00-10:30 AM PST at http://www.blogtalkradio.com/TeachParallel and in world in Galileo /178/201/32/
  • We have three talks for our lecture series ready to schedule
  • We also have the Callipygian Christensen art show Shenlei Winkleris setting up for us. Callipygian is buy taking pictures. I put one of them up on the easel in the senate area. It is just plain beautiful.

Voice

  • still lots of struggles getting Asterisk based voice system that Johann and Joel have been working on
    • big downside is it required a modded SL viewer
    • For the time being we are going with the Freeswitch solution. It currently does voice over the whole region, but IBM guys are working on incorporating spatialized voice.

Teach Parallel

  • First blogcast with Dan Garcia was a great success
  • I was in Galileo
  • Wilf is going to be encouraging some folk to attend in-world
  • Paul has concerns that since only a 1/2 hour session, we may have insufficient time for questions and answers, since we effectively only have 20 minutes with the given speaker with all the introductions and goodbyes.
  • Mic had the good suggestion of taking questions after the 30 broadcast is done.
  • Blogcast radio actually will cut broadcast after 1/2 hour, but will keep recording the blogcast for another 1/2 hour so we could keep the Q&A going for a reasonable amount of time.
  • I will also record the chat session in Gallileo, if there is discussion there, and will also let it guide my discussion with the guest
  • Paul will be monitoring the blogtalk radio phone lines and controlling questions from there
  • A key to this success, will be asking our guests to available for up to an hour, rather than just a 1/2 hour

Avatar customization and identity

  • Shenlei brought some folk in from SL, but it was not an altogether pleasant experience because people could not represent themselves as they are used to in SL
  • This is an important issue without an immediate perfect solution
  • Shenlei has offered to make some well crafted basics be available for people in ScienceSim. Many thanks.
  • Mic, had the good suggestion of having a device to touch which will give new users folder with all the goodies.
  • There are some permission problems with the existing goodies. I am hoping to rustle up some of my students to resolve the problems
  • There are also hard issues involving intellectual property, in having material be available.

Ensuring good behavior

  • Discussion of avatar identity led to enforcing appropriate behavior
  • Banning folk by IP address was discussed for egregious troublemakers. Mic suggested an IP tables solution (har, har)
